How to Hire a Temporary Employee

Important Information - Before you Hire:

Temporary office workers in clerical-technical type classifications may be hired for an initial time period of 120 calendar days if they work 20 hours per week or more. Extensions of up to 60 days are possible when an extension request is completed. Office Services files the request for an extension with the Clerical Technical Union, which must approve the extension for the worker to continue employment. The request must be filed at least seven (7) working days prior to the worker's end date to ensure enough time for the Clerical Technical Union to review.

All temporary clerical employment at MSU must follow these guidelines that are part of the University's labor agreement with the Clerical Technical Union. The conditions pertain to the position and the work, not the individual. A department cannot hire a new temporary employee at the end of 180 days to perform the same work. The University has agreed with the CTU that in such an instance, it is likely that a regular position should be created.

To Hire a Temporary Office Worker:

The process is very easy! Call Office Services at 517.355.6620. Staff will determine your department's needs according to the nature and complexity of the work, length of assignment, skills required and desired, and any other information of importance to you. Office Services will identify a candidate and send that person to your office on the date requested for the assignment. If for any reason you are not satisfied with the individual, contact Office Services and arrangements will be made for another person for your consideration.

Once you hire an Office Services temporary worker, Office Services handles all the details for you, including payroll processing.

What to do if the work assignment extends beyond 180 calendar days:

First, it is important to consider whether the position should be posted through Human Resources as a regular, permanent position. If the position only requires ongoing, part-time support, it is permissible to continue employing someone through Office Services on an on-call basis for 19 hours per week or less. However, the hiring department must adhere to the 19 hour per week maximum. It is monitored by Human Resources and the Controller's Office to ensure compliance with the Clerical-Technical labor agreement.
